Being Googley

In IISC’s first mailing of the year (sent, as is our tradition, in the form of an old-fashioned postcard beautifully designed by Kristen Hughes) we quote Jeff Jarvis, author of What Would Google Do? on the front of the card with his oft-repeated words: “Do what you do best and link to the rest”.

In the accompanying copy, we interpret that phrase as a powerful strategic directive for the sector:

“There is no question that we are living in a confusing time of turbulence and uncertainty, possibility and opportunity. In this context, ‘Do what you do best and link to the rest,’ offers the sector a simple yet profound strategy for moving forward: restructure and reinvent our organizations; connect and collaborate across boundaries. By standing together on this new ground, we will find ways to tackle our most intractable problems as we work to create a more just and sustainable world”.

And, in the spirit of 2010 and being googley, Kristen Hughes blogged and posted the postcard, she was then pinged by Jeff Jarvis, she forwarded his information to me, he and I then exchanged e-mails.  I am sending him a stack of postcards and was able to thank him directly for his good work and its influence on my thinking, IISC’s and undoubtedly legions of social change agents working to apply new thinking and ways of working to the most complex issues of our day.

Let us know if you would like the postcard and what you think of this quote as a simple strategic directive for the coming year.

What I like so much about this quote is that it points us towards being in community, inviting us to excel in being who we are while also welcoming others to be the best of who they are.
