Thanks for this Curtis. I love the statement that the first speak made, when she realized that her work had meaning. Some of the women from the Sisterhood for Peace, who were working for peace in Sudan, had an idea of creating a theater piece to tell the story of their country to help others understand the situation and to help those who know the stories to engage with one another across their differences and begin to heal. They were convinced that creating their own Sankofa would be a powerful vehicle for building peace.
Thanks, Cynthia. Your story reminds me of the work that I did years ago at Silveira House in Zimbabwe, working with their Civics Awareness Department to help people from around the country re-present their stories through theater as a way of identifying leverage points for change. Powerful stuff!
